Working class mum: tips for hiring a new nanny

Most young Nigerian mothers who are trying to balance their careers with having young ones often discover that they cannot do it on their own.

If you are in this category but you have the option of dropping the kids off at Grandma’s then lucky you! A lot of other women don’t have that option and they are at their wit’s end.

If you are one of such women and you are thinking of hiring a nanny, then consider these before you go ahead.

1. Count the cost

I am not talking about her pay alone (which should be good, by the way). You need to put all the ramifications into consideration. Your precious child will be spending considerable amounts of time with a ‘stranger’. Are you completely comfortable with that?

2. To stay or not?

Many homes prefer live-in nannies but that does not mean it will work for you. Are you the kind of person that likes her privacy and space? If so, a live-in nanny won’t do. At the same time, know that your arrangement with her would have to be very structured. So, weigh the pros and cons of either option.

3. What are your turn-offs?

Be very sure of what you want and behaviours/attributes you won’t be able to condone. This means that you should consider the religion, values, marital status, age, etc. that you and your spouse would be comfortable with.

4. Checks

Very important! As you consider this option, also brainstorm ways you will hold the nanny accountable and ensure that she is good for your child(ren) – health-wise and otherwise.

5. Job description

It is true that in Nigeria, most nannies end up doubling as housemaids. However, make sure that you discuss this with the nanny you want to hire. Don’t assume that she would know to clean when you are not around. If you never agreed on that before then technically speaking, it is not her job. Also, decide beforehand if you comfortable with her cooking for your kid(s).
