In the first installment of this article, I established that a toxic employee is an employee with a poor attitude to work and then who negatively influences other people’s own until the work environment is no longer conducive for productivity. 

You should care about this kind of employees because they hold other people back from giving their best to the job. Also, they are wasting your money because you are paying them but they are not completely doing what they are supposed to be doing. 

I have already discussed four (4) signs of a toxic employee. Here is the remaining two (2).

5. They are lazy

Laziness can be toxic. Lazy people piggyback on other people’s hard work. In the end, they only coast and sap other people’s energy. They believe doing that doing something well once will cover for other times in the future.

6. They complain

They are always the first to raise an objection when a new policy is implemented. They always have excuses for not doing their jobs and they would rather throw someone else under the bus than take responsibility. 

Now that you know the signs, what should do you? 

First of all, you should do an appraisal so that you can see if they are really bleeding your company of money. The result of the appraisal will tell you how heavily you should come down on him/her. 

Secondly, you need to talk to the employee and ask if they have any issues they are not saying out loud. 

Next, explain how you will not condone their behaviour. Give the person a timeframe to turn a new leaf and if you think that they have too much time on their hands then you should give them target to hit. In this way, they are using their time in more productive ways.
