Sauna: what you should know

If you have read my post on the health benefits of saunas, you will most likely be feeling the itch to get a sauna bath. But wait!

There are certain things that you should know first.

Due to the severe heat you are exposing your body to, you should know these:

1. You should not drink alcohol before using the sauna. It is dangerous as it may lead to hypotension, arrhythmia or even sudden death.

2. Pregnant women or people already suffering from cardiovascular problems like low blood pressure should seek medical counsel before using the sauna.

3. Spend only about 20 minutes at a stretch in the sauna. If you are a first-timer, don’t spend more than 10 minutes.

4. People suffering from kidney disease should stay away from the sauna due to the severe dehydration risk.

5. Your body temperature may rise to about 40 degrees Celsius.

6. Drink lots of water immediately after using a sauna so as to replenish lost fluids.

Using a sauna can be fun until it isn’t. Inasmuch as it is beneficial to the health, if you don’t take these precautions, you might bear the brunt.

As a bonus, two other things that you should know about saunas is that there are two prevalent myths.

One is that sweating can remove toxins. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Science does not prove that sweating detoxifies. That is the job of the intestines, liver, and kidneys. Don’t feel bad if you believed that myth before. Many others still do.

The second myth is that saunas aid weight loss. Sure, you may lose a little weight while sweating in the sauna but it is mostly fluids and that will be replaced once you eat or drink something.

Now that you know these, you can visit the sauna. Have fun!
